We were proud to work with the City to draft and pass paid sick days, and to expand the law to cover safe leave and expand family definitions, and we applaud the Mayor, Public Advocate, and City Council for recognizing that New Yorkers also deserve paid personal time.
In New York City, there are laws that can help us when we or our loved ones are sick, when we need to care for our families’ serious health needs, or when we’re growing our families. We’ve been out and about meeting with people to present information about some of these different laws.
This is an exciting moment for our movement to honor care and support basic rights for all workers – in sickness and in health! It is a recognition that workers need time for themselves and their families and that government has a role to play in making sure that happens.
A Better Balance was thrilled to learn from and share with our partners from the government and non-profit worlds to improve enforcement strategies and further build a strong relationship among advocates and agency representatives.
We applaud the passage today of Michigan’s earned paid sick time law giving nearly 2 million hard-working Michiganders the right to take time off to care for themselves and their families. But the fight is not over.
If you work in New York City and your employer is denying you time off to recover from the flu or other illness, to seek medical treatment, or to care for a sick family member, call our Helpline at (212) 430-5982. We are here to help.
For too many mothers and those that love them, balancing family and work is a constant struggle, from staying healthy during pregnancy, to breastfeeding while working, to getting a sick parent or child to the doctor. This Mother’s Day, it’s time for more than cards and flowers—let’s honor our mothers with the policy changes working families need. We won’t stop fighting until all of us can be there for our families like Ileana was.
Workers can now use their sick time to care for a more diverse range of family members, as well as to address needs arising out of domestic or sexual violence. All workers deserve the right to care for themselves and their families, no matter what their families look like. We’ll keep fighting here in New York and across the country to ensure that right is a reality for all our families.
