On January 28, the Trump Administration fired Democratic EEOC Commissioners Jocelyn Samuels and Charlotte Burrows and EEOC general counsel Karla Gilbride.
The following is a statement by Inimai Chettiar, President of A Better Balance:
“The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) enforces all our nation’s laws against discrimination in the workplace—including the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (PWFA), the Amercians with Disabilities Act, Title VII, and more. Their role in ensuring equitable workplaces for all is vital. It is an outrage that the Trump Administration has made moves to gut the agency and hamstring its ability to carry out its mission by firing key EEOC officials who have tirelessly championed robust enforcement of our workplace laws.
This, along with other recent executive orders, sends a strong and clear message that emboldens employers to be hostile and unwelcoming towards women, people of color, LGBTQ people, and immigrants. It is also a blow to pregnant and postpartum workers and their recent, hard-won rights under the PWFA—a law that is not yet common knowledge.
But the Trump Administration cannot wipe these laws from existence and employers still must obey the law, or we will see them in court.”
