Court Approves $14 Million Settlement Agreement with Pregnant Workers from 2013-2014

Pregnant workers represented by co-counsel A Better Balance, Mehri & Skalet, PLLC and the National Women’s Law Center announced that on April 29, 2020, the United States District Court for the Southern District of Illinois approved a settlement in the amount of $14 million in the matter of Borders v. Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., No. 3:17-cv-0506 (S.D. Ill.). The settlement pays for claims by pregnant workers that they had requested but were denied workplace accommodations at Walmart between March 19, 2013 and March 5, 2014.

Pregnant workers represented by co-counsel A Better Balance, Mehri & Skalet, PLLC and the National Women’s Law Center announced that on April 29, 2020, the United States District Court for the Southern District of Illinois approved a settlement in the amount of $14 million in the matter of Borders v. The settlement pays for claims by pregnant workers that they had requested but were denied workplace accommodations at Walmart between March 19, 2013 and March 5, 2014. The settlement also covers the costs of administering the settlement and legal fees and expenses.

Walmart issued the following statement:

We’re happy both sides could come together to reach a resolution. Walmart has had a strong policy against discrimination in place for many years and we continue to be a great place for women to work and advance. We are proud to offer a parental leave plan which provides birth mothers who are full-time hourly associates with16 weeks of paid leave.
