The average woman earns just 80 cents for every dollar a man makes, and the wage gap is even worse for women of color. For every dollar paid to a white man, African American women earn just 61 cents, Native American women earn just 58 cents, and Latina women earn just 53 cents.
Momentum continues to build for paid family and medical leave across the country in the most exciting legislative session for paid family and medical leave bills yet. We’re working with coalition partners on bills across the country, providing drafting assistance and key legal and policy support.
A Better Balance attended the hearing in Albany along with many of our partners and submitted testimony to give voice to some of our client’s incredibly difficult experiences and to offer a host of recommendations.
Throughout the day, A Better Balance met with lawmakers to educate them about several issues important to Tennessee’s women and families. Our message was clear: Tennessee’s working families and women need greater protections and support in the workplace.
We work in cities across the country to fight for fair workplace policies such as paid leave and sick time, predictable and flexible work schedules, and nondiscrimination, which often involves helping cities defend those policies against state efforts to roll them back.
While federal progress has stalled since the FMLA, states and cities have come up with innovative policies for filling in the gaps that persist. And we won’t stop fighting until all workers have a real right to the leave they need when they need it the most.
We’re proud to have worked closely with coalition partners to get this bill passed and will continue to push for progressive paid leave legislation around the country so that everyone can take the paid leave they need.
