Yes on 118: Paid Family and Medical Leave on the Ballot in Colorado

As Election Day rapidly approaches, voters across Colorado have the opportunity to approve an initiative — Proposition 118 — that will establish a statewide paid family and medical leave program. And there are several ways for you to get involved! Only 1 in 5 Coloradans have access to paid family and medical leave to care for a new child, recover from a serious health condition, or care for a seriously ill loved one. The pandemic has shown that this ballot initiative is needed now, more than ever.

Colorado Sets A New Standard for Paid Sick Leave

On July 14, Colorado Governor Jared Polis signed into law the Colorado Healthy Families and Workplaces Act, which guarantees workers the right to earn paid sick time. A Better Balance was thrilled to play a pivotal role in the campaign. The victory in Colorado is especially significant given the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting economic crisis. Paid sick leave has been shown to improve public health, reduce the spread of contagion, and provide a critical safety net to workers who are struggling to make ends meet.

We Applaud the Passage of Paid Sick Leave Legislation in Colorado

On June 15, the Colorado General Assembly passed SB 205, which will guarantee that workers across the state can earn a modest amount of paid sick leave. The bill will allow workers to care for themselves or a family member when sick or experiencing domestic abuse or sexual assault. Colorado joins 12 states, Washington D.C., and dozens of cities in establishing a basic legal right to paid sick time.

A Better Balance Applauds Colorado’s Proposed Rule Expanding Access to Overtime Pay

The proposed Colorado Overtime and Minimum Pay Standards (“COMPS”) Order would expand coverage to many workers who were previously excluded, including individuals employed in construction and manufacturing. The proposed rule will also set a salary threshold for overtime at $42,500 and adjust it up to $57,500 by 2026, ensuring that many more low-wage workers are entitled to overtime.
