This week, the U.S. Supreme Court handed down three 5-4 decisions with terrible consequences for workers, women, and immigrants. A Better Balance unites in solidarity with all those affected. And we are as resolved as ever to fight for justice for all vulnerable groups.
Today is Moms’ Equal Pay Day. On average, mothers who work full-time, year-round, only earn 71 cents for every dollar fathers earn. To bring this into focus, in a role where a man is making $40,000 per year for a full-time job, the average mother would only make $28,400, or $11,600 less for that same role.
As part of this fight to end sexual violence and harassment, we want to ensure that workers understand what their rights are in the workplace. Sexual harassment is physical or verbal conduct of a sexual nature or conduct based on your sex that unreasonably interferes with your work performance, affects your employment, or makes your place intimidating, hostile or offensive.
According to Aviva, learning about her rights strengthened her confidence when negotiating with her then-prospective employer. “I’m so grateful for the information that A Better Balance provided,” Aviva told us, “as it enabled me to advocate for myself.”
To mark Equal Pay Day, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo introduced legislation that would prevent employers in the State from relying on or inquiring about a job applicant’s salary history, a practice that disadvantages women and people of color who historically earn lower wages.
Equal Pay Day is not a holiday. It is a day to recognize the many structural inequities, from sexism to racism to the maternal wage gap, that result in U.S. women earning 82 cents—and Black women earning 68 cents—for every dollar their white male counterparts make.

Unfortunately, some of these proposals are at risk of getting cut from the final budget due to opposition from the New York State Senate.
