Women's Equality Act

Women's Equality Act

On January 9, 2013, Governor Cuomo announced in his State of the State Address that he will advance an omnibus bill, the Women's Equality Act, which will break down barriers that perpetuate discrimination and inequality based on gender.

The Governor's 10-Point bill will:

  • Protect a Woman’s Freedom of Choice
  • Achieve Pay Equity
  • Stop Sexual Harassment in All Workplaces
  • Allow for the Recovery of Attorneys’ Fees in Employment and Credit and Lending Cases
  • Strengthen Human Trafficking Laws
  • End Family Status Discrimination
  • Stop Source-of-Income Discrimination
  • Stop Housing Discrimination for Victims of Domestic Violence
  • Stop Pregnancy Discrimination Once and For All
  • Protect Victims of Domestic Violence by Strengthening Order-of-Protection Laws

Three of the above issues are central to ABB's mission and highlighted in our Working Families' Bill of Rights. The Women's Equality Act would combat pregnancy discrimination by creating specific legal protection in the Human Rights Law requiring employers to provide reasonable accommodations for pregnancy-related conditions. It would also strengthen equal pay laws, for example, by ensuring that employees aren't punished for sharing salary information. Finally, it would amend current law to prohibit employers from denying work or promotion to workers simply because they have children.
